Marc Heaton

Marc Heaton a versatile Welsh artist was born in 1973 in Pontypridd South Wales, educated in welsh, a fluent welsh speaker. He graduated with a B.A in Fine Art from Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design in London 1996. His lecturers were Eileen Cooper R.A and Maurice Cockrill R.A. He has been producing artwork for over two decades.

As a young boy, he spent a lot of time in France, he realised early that his talents and interests lay in his observational skills,of people, sailor, the circus, day to day characters on the streets, bars, restaurants. Through his artwork he has tried to capture theses lasting images. The paintings all start by shifting through thousands of sketches done over the years. The sketches are based on spontaneity of hoarded disconnected fragments of knowledge like threads of memory stitched together until a knot of shapes and lines reveal a clear image that only exists in me. Like a great collection each piece is woven together into a personnel puzzle. In each puzzle characters reveal themselves that then go on to become the paintings you see in front of you today. His studio in Devon is a colourful humorous mix of found objects, and materials paintings, drawings and sculptures, it’s like walking into his own wonderland, his artwork has bent and shaped itself to respond to each unique and personal perspective of the present time in which we live.

Over the years there has been many influences such as Chagall, Miro, Matisse, Picasso, Ronald Searle, and early Punch illustrator's, The Cobra movement also, and great comedians and writers such has Spike Milligan, Edward Lear and Peter Sellers, they all have shaped his art. In the silence of the studio with no distractions, only then can all the scribbles, marks, lines and shapes reveal themselves like sentences twisted together. Marc has explored many genres in his artistic career, with paintings and sculptures: abstract, geometric abstractions, realism, surrealism, portraits etc. However, his whimsical, poetic and humorous pieces are the ones that came to stay. He is incredibly good at that, and creates fascinating and gripping characters and concepts.

Marc Heaton will be exhibiting in the Artizan Garden Gallery from 10th June - 30th June with an Artist Preview 10th June 18:00-20:00
