Alan Gregory

“For me, painting is about helping the observer appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and to celebrate the environment that surrounds them.  But this beauty can sometimes be elusive, or not obvious at first glance, and it is this hidden element that I also seek to explore.”

Having been drawing, painting, and collecting art for many years, Alan Gregory lives and works in Shaldon, Devon.  Having had a successful career as a senior academic, Alan made the decision in 2014 to devote more of his life to his art, and has been a full-time painter ever since.  His collection of landscape paintings has an abstract quality, taking in both full views and macro details of the ‘hidden elements’ of the natural world.

Alan will be exhibiting alongside Clare Jenkinson and Chris Pitman in The Power of Three at Artizan in August 2017.

The exhibition will run from 1st – 29th August with a ‘Meet the Artists’ private viewing on 5th August from 6pm to 8pm.

About the Work

"My work is informed by the natural landscape, particularly the South Devon coastline with its ever-changing light conditions. Other landscapes that provide regular inspiration include those of rural Devon, North Mallorca and my native Wales. For me, painting is about helping the observer appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and to celebrate the environment that surrounds them.  But this beauty can sometimes be elusive, or not obvious at first glance, and it is this hidden element that I also seek to explore.  This is particularly the case in my more abstract work.

Whatever the subject, my intention is always to share the sense of uplift that I feel when looking at the landscapes from which I draw my inspiration.  In this regard, I hope that my work reflects an emotional response to what I see.

I am a member of the Flying Colours Group of artists and have exhibited with them at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter in May 2016.  I am also a member of the Devon Artists’ Network, and was part of the Open Studios event in 2016.  My work has also been shown at the South West Academy Open Exhibition 2015, In Nature’s Colours 2016, the Teignwich Village Artists’ Exhibitions 2015 and 2016, and the North Street Gallery’s December 2016 Exhibition in Ashburton.  My work has featured in Devon Life magazine."
